Dictionaries management

Dictionary management is available from the menu Dictionaries > Management. When selected, a dialog box appears, allowing to create new dictionaries or to open an existing one.

Use the menu File > New dictionary to create a dictionary from scratch. You can also open an existing one from the menu File > Open dictionary.

Add new words

Once a dictionary has been opened (or created), it is possible to add new words within through the menu Dictionary > Add word(s) .... The following dialog box is then displayed:

You can add a single word by entering it in the field Add a single word and pressing Add button.

However it is more efficient to add a whole list of words from an ASCII file. Indeed you can define your own dictionaries into ASCII files and convert them to the internal Q-Word dictionary format. To do that, just specify your ASCII file in the field Add a words list by pressing the button ....

As indicated, the ASCII file must respect the following rules:
  • 1) File must be encoded in UTF-8 format if you want to manage accented characters.
  • 2) The file must contain one word per line.
  • 3) You can specify clues/definitions for a word by adding a '=' at the end of the word, followed by the clues.
  • 4) Multiple clues/definitions must be separated by a ';'.

Look for words

You can look for words in the dictionary by entering a mask in the Look for a word field. You can use the character * to replace any sequence of letters, and the character ? to replace a single letter. In the following example, the *stands for the letters 'arth' while the ? stands for the letter 'a'.

When a word in the Result field is selected, its details are displayed in the Word properties panel. You can click the button Modify to change the definitions / clues associated with this word.
